RE:      Using Mondo Bookshop Materials in Reader’s

             Workshop

In the District’s first ever unified literacy adoption, Mondo Bookshop materials were selected for use by all K-5 elementary students in Saint Paul Public Schools, including ELL and Special Education students.

We know from independent evaluations that implementation of Mondo Bookshop has resulted in double digit gains of children reading at or above grade level in six other urban districts:  South Florida, New Haven, Hartford, Boston, New York, and Elgin, Illinois.*  As we move forward in our  shared goal to improve reading proficiency for our children, Literacy Coaches at each site are available to support the job embedded implementation of these materials.

Mondo Bookshop is for all K-5 reading teachers, including Special Education Service Providers and ELL teachers for their Reader’s Workshop and Skills Block.

We have provided materials for whole group mini-lessons and small group instruction in grades K-5 and for phonics instruction in grades K-1. Phonics materials for intervention or for use with newcomer ELL students are provided for students in grades 2 and above.

Please note:

1.      The district Elementary Literacy Pacing Guide supports Readers Workshop and ensures all students receive consistent instruction toward standard.

2.      Classroom library materials will continue to be used for independent reading and for Writer’s Workshop.

3.      For those students reading well above grade level, teachers should use the text for whole group instruction specified in the Elementary Literacy Pacing Guide.  Please modify the mini-lesson to provide academic challenge for all students.

4.      A daily 30-minute Skills Block/Word Study time should be included in each classroom’s literacy program.

SHARED MONDO MATERIALS FOR LITERACY COACHES, SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICE PROVIDERS, AND ELL TEACHERS

1.      To support collaboration between Special Education Service Providers, ELL Teachers and General Education Teachers, an additional set of teacher materials were purchased for each school.   Building literacy coaches, Special Education teachers, and ELL teachers should have access to these teacher materials.  They should be located in the school’s Book Room, a central location that also holds sets of 6 copies of each of the guided reading books for checkout.  Because these materials are intended for common use it is necessary that they be checked out and not be kept individually for extended periods of time.

2.      An extra Phonics 2+ Intervention Kit was ordered for the Book Room for checkout by any teacher at any grade.

3.      For further details regarding which teacher materials were ordered, or for a list of kit components or any other part of the purchase, please email Textbook Specialist, Randi Lundberg.
